FACTS: ANIMAL WELFARE ON EUROPEAN FUR FARMS

The animal welfare on European fur farms are regulated through 1999 Council of Europe Recommendation, Directive 98/58 on the protection of farmed animals and Council Regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing.

Some European countries have additional legislation.

The European fur sector voluntarily implements animal welfare standards following the principles in the European Commission's Welfare Quality project. The animal welfare programme for fur farmed species is labeled WelFur. It is based on animal indicators and developed by independent scientists from 7 European universities.
